Sadly, I don’t know nearly as much as I would like to know about Henry Weiss. Here is what I do know. Henry was born in Bristol, Bucks County, Pennsylvania(195) in 1822.(79) I don’t know how long Henry was in Bristol, or who his parents were, or even the exact date of his birth. I’ve been looking for this information for over ten years! I seem to have run out of leads to follow — this is one of my many brick walls
When he was 24 years old, Henry married Catherine HOLTON in Salem County, New Jersey on December 17, 1846. They had at least four children while still in New Jersey, where Henry made his living as a house carpenter.(45) Sometime after the birth of the fourth child in 1852, Henry and Catherine moved their family to Macoupin County, Illinois where they settled in the Brighton area, and Henry began farming and raising livestock.(44.52) After their move to Illinois at least six, and possibly seven, additional children were born.

- John Adam (1847-1922)
- Sarah Rachel (1849-1881)
- William Henry (1851-1927)
- Mary Louisa (ca 1852-1921)
- Samuel J. (ca 1855)
- Wilson Townsen (1857-1884)
- Catherine (ca 1858)
- Eva A. (1860-1920)
- James H. (1861-1898)
- Emma Jane (1864-1926)
- Bertie (1872)*
Henry died December 11, 1887 in Brighton from Kidney disease.(72) He is buried in Brighton City Cemetery.(79)
*There is some confusion over the number of children born to Henry and Catherine. Henry’s obituary states “He left seven living children (death having taken three) to mourn.”, indicating he was the father of ten children.(546) In addition, Emma Jane’s obituary states that she was “the youngest child of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Weiss”, however the obituary also states that she was “formerly Mary Jane Weiss”,(419) so clearly the accuracy of the obituary is questionable! The 1880 census for Henry’s household indicates that Bertie was Henry’s 8-year-old daughter,(40) so for now my working assumption is that Henry and Catherine had eleven children.
