Miscellaneous Weiss graves
We saw several other Weiss graves while walking the cemetery. I suspect these are related to the 'other' Henry Weiss who settled in Macoupin County, but because they are possibly related and because it may be a long time before we get back to Brighton Cemetery, we also photographed these graves.
Brown Addition: east end of cemetery
Mundy - Bean family plot
approximate GPS coordinates: 39.0368, -90.138
- Facing east, a tall narrow stone for Rowland Mundy (west face) and his wife, Asaneth Kellogg Mundy (north face). The stone is weathered and the west face is particularly difficult to read.
- To the south of this stone is a large stone which appears to be relatively recently placed with very little weathering. This stone belongs to George L. Bean and Adeline Mundy Bean, relationship unknown.
- Behind these stones, to the south-east, are a row of small flat stones in good condition. These belong to Kate E. Bean and Frank E. Bean, and an infant, Frances W. Weiss. Adjacent to these, to the north, are several very worn stones which are much older. They appear to be engraved on the top of the rounded surface, but it was not possible to read them.
Henry Weiss family plot
approximate GPS coordinates: 39.0359, -90.1367
- This is a row of five graves, with one tall stone in the center of the row. I assume this is the stone for Catherine Weiss, wife of Henry. This stone is tall and very weathered and difficult to read. However, I can just make out 'Catherine' out the top. The bottom row appears to read Jan xxx and in the center the stone appears to read 'MARRIED'. This is very difficult to read, and other than 'Catherine' I am speculating. Catherine's death record indicates she died 8 Jan 1884 at age 58.
- At the far right of this row of graves, to the north, lies the grave of Kate H Weiss. This stone was broken, with the top lying on propped next to the base. We temporarily placed it on the base for the photo. The stone is quite weathered and other than the name, is difficult to read. The transcription page I worked from indicates that Kate died at age 6 mos.
- At the far left of this row lies the grave of James H Weiss. This a flat stone and is in excellent condition, probably placed well after the death of James in 1898.
- There are two unmarked graves next to the grave of Catherine. The transcription pages I worked from indicate two other burials on this plot. One is the grave of Henry Weiss, husband of Catherine, who died in 1887. The other belongs to and infant, William Henry Weiss or Henry William Weiss who died in 1878 at age 1 year.

Yaraum Plot
Block I
approximate GPS coordinates: 39.0357, -90.1371
- This is a small plot very near the Weiss-Rowan plot. Though there is no known relationship to these Yaraums, Catherine and Henry's oldest son, John Adam, married a Catherine Yaraum. It's possible these Yaraums are related to her. There is an old stone, worn but quite legible, belonging to Samuel Yaraum.
- A second stone, also in very good condition, belongs to Abby A. Yarham. Yarham appears to be a variation of Yaraum. I have seen John's wife Catherine referred to by both Yaraum and Yarham on documents.
- Transcription records also list an Alice Gerdes Yarham buried in this plot, but no marker was found.
Weiss - Rowan family plot
Block II
approximate GPS coordinates: 39.0368, -90.138
- This small plot is adjacent to the street. A tall, narrow stone lies to the south. The stone is very weathered and nearly illegible, but I can just barely make out Wilson T Weiss, Died Jan 2x 188x. This looks like 1881, but I know from his death record that he died in 1884. Then it looks like AGED (something) with a 30 beneath it. However his death record gives his age as 27.
- Just to the left of Wilson's stone is a small flat stone marking the grave of his wife, Mary Rowan Weiss. This is in good condition.
- Behind the graves of Wilson and Mary Weiss lies the grave of her brother, William John Rowan. This is also in good condition.
Block E
William Henry Weiss family plot
Lot 1
approximate GPS coordinates: 39.0363, -90.1385
- This is a large plot with two rows of graves, listed in not particular order. All stones are in good condition, with minimum wear or staining. I am listing them in not particular order. The first stone belongs to Ellen L. Weiss and her husband William H. Weiss. William is a son to Henry and Catherine Weiss.
- Another stone belongs to Ellen and William's son, Elmer N. Weiss and his fourth wife, Goldie F. Weiss.
- Another stone in this plot belongs to Ellen and William's son, Frederick W. Weiss, and his wife, Cora M. Davis Weiss.
- A smaller stone lies nearby, marking the grave of an infant, Frederick W. Jr. This is presumably the son of Frederick and Cora.
- There is also a stone for Frank Weiss, another son of Ellen and William.
- Transcriptions also indicate that Daisy Belle Weiss, wife of Allen S. Weiss, is buried in this plot, though no marker was found. It is also unknown why Allen is not buried with Daisy, but is buried in the plot of his sister-in-law, Adeline A. Weiss, who was divorced from his brother, Elmer N. Weiss.
Block G
Weiss - Hill family plot
Lot 260
approximate GPS coordinates: 39.0359, -90.1378
- This is a large plot with several graves. I am listing them here in no particular order. All stones are in good condition, though some show some staining and could use a good cleaning. One stone belongs to Adeline A. Weiss daughter of Frank E Bean and Kate E Bean mentioned above.
- Also found in this plot is the stone for her brother, Earl M. Bean.
- Their sister, C. Ruth Hill, also lies in this plot, along with her husband, Walter L. Hill.
- Also buried in this are Adeline's sons, E. Eugene Weiss and Allen Mitchell Weiss. There is no stone for Allen, but his grave is marked with a military marker.
- Jennifer Lynn Weiss, granddaughter of Allen Mitchell Weiss, is also buried in this plot. Jennifer died as an infant.
- Allen S. Weiss, brother-in-law to Adeline, is also buried in this plot. His grave is unmarked.
Block Q
Weiss - Watson family plot
Lot 28
approximate GPS coordinates: 39.0352, -90.1378
- This is a small plot consisting of one large stone, in very good condition. The front is inscribed with the names Wilber H Weiss and Elsie M Weiss. Elsie is the wife of Wilber. The back of the stone is inscribed with the names of their daughter, Ethel F Batson, and her husband, Ben H Batson. Slightly to the southeast of this stone lies a military marker for Ben, inscribed Benjamin H Batson. The birth year on this marker differs by one years from that on the main tombstone.
Massears Family Plot
Lot 20
approximate GPS coordinates: 39.0362, -90.1381
- There are two stones in this plot belonging to Walter J. Massears and Frances I. Massears. There is no known relationship to my Weiss family, however, the second wife of Frank Weiss, Zella Pruitt, was at one time married to a Massears. Because I recognized the name and because I don't know when, if ever, I will get back to Brighton Cemetery, I decided to photograph these graves.
- Estella Widaman Weiss, approximate GPS coordinates: 39.0362, -90.1381. Estella is buried in the Widaman plot, which lies just west of the William Henry Weiss plot.
- Delores Jane Weiss and Wayne Wallace Weiss, approximate GPS coordinates: 39.0353, -90.1383. There is also a military plaque marking Wayne's grave.
